Hey everyone, Jack Laurie here. Scuba diving has been part of my life since I was ten years old. Being underwater feels like entering another world of peace, color, and adventure. The feeling of weightlessness, the silence, and the life all around you make every dive unforgettable.

I still remember my first dive off the Great Barrier Reef. I was nervous at first, but the moment I descended, I was hooked. That dive changed how I saw the world and started a lifelong passion for exploring what’s beneath the surface.

What keeps me diving isn’t just the thrill but the perspective. When you’re surrounded by creatures that have existed for millions of years, your everyday worries fade away. Each dive reminds me how small we are and how much we depend on this planet.

Here are my top five tips for scuba diving like a pro.

1. Master your breathing

The best divers breathe slow and steady. It keeps you calm, saves air, and helps control your movement. Think of your breath as your rhythm underwater. Stay relaxed, stay present, and you’ll notice everything around you more clearly.

2. Respect the ocean

You’re a guest in someone else’s home. Never touch coral, chase fish, or stir up the sand. The less you disturb, the more you’ll see. Let the ocean reveal itself on its own terms.

3. Stay calm and trust your training

Every diver faces unexpected moments: strong currents, gear issues, or low visibility. What matters is how you respond. Take a slow breath, assess the situation, and rely on what you’ve practiced. Staying calm keeps you safe and sharp.

4. Dive with curiosity, not competition

It’s not about going deeper or longer than anyone else. My favorite dives are often shallow reefs full of light and life. Slow down and look for the small things. The more curious you are, the richer the experience becomes.

5. Be a steward of the sea

The ocean has given me perspective and peace. In return, I try to protect it. Use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid single-use plastics, and support conservation efforts. Every diver can help keep the ocean healthy for the next generation.

Every time I dive, I’m reminded why I fell in love with the ocean. It’s beautiful, humbling, and full of wonder. If you’ve ever thought about trying scuba diving, go for it. It might just change how you see the world. -Jack Laurie
